Mönchengladbach has transformed itself from “Manchester on the Rhine” to the “Green City of the lower Rheinland”. Almost half the city area comprises parks and gardens.
The city has made a name for itself in the world of sport because of “The Foals”, better known as the football club Borussia Mönchengladbach, a successful team playing in the German first division and boasting a glorious history.
A highlight for aircraft enthusiasts are flights in the JU 52 “Aunty JU” from Mönchengladbach airport. The JU 52 was developed by the engineer Hugo Junkers, who was born here.
The city is also famous for the over 800 year-old minster, which towers over the old town, and the municipal museum Schloss Rheydt. Mönchengladbach is also home to Germany’s oldest harness racing track.
In addition to the many sights in and around the old town, it is just a short stroll into the nearby pedestrian zone with the Minto shopping centre, a regional retail destination with over 100 shops over an area of 42,000 m².
